The New Testament "Church Of Christ"

The "Oldest" Religion And Church In The World

By Dan Billingsly

Which is the "oldest" religion and  church in the world?  Is it the Roman Catholic or Greek Orthodox church?  Is it one of the more than 1000 different kinds of Protestant denominational churches?   Is it one of the ancient pagan religions?  In truth, none of these can compare with the biblical plan, purpose, prophecy  or real  age of the true New Testament "church of Christ."

The New Testament Church "Before" Creation Of The World

The New Testament "church" is the oldest religious institution known to man. Its roots go back to "before" the creation of the universe.  In plan and purpose it dates back into eternity -- "before" the creation of the world. It is older than Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham,  Old Testament Israel, much older than any of the ancient Oriental or African idolatrous religions, and it is millennia older that modern Catholicism or Protestantism.  God was speaking of and planning for the  New Testament "church of Christ" long before Adam, Moses, Confucius, Buddha, the Catholic church and its Pope, Martin Luther, John Wesley, or any modern Protestant reformer.

The Scriptures teach that God planned the New Testament church "before" the foundation of the world.

"...he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world...Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ" (Eph. 1:4-5).  "And to make all men see what  is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:  To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Eph. 3:9-11; see also 1 Cor 2:7; 2 Tim 1:9; Tit. 1:2; 1 Pet. 1:2; Rev. 13:8).

The Old Testament  "mystery" of Ephesians 3 refers to the new covenant "gospel" plan of salvation for Christ's New Testament "church"  that God  revealed in the Old Testament  through "promise" and "prophecy."  The details of the "mystery" for the New Testament "plan of salvation" and "age," according to God's eternal plan, were kept "secret" or as a "mystery" by God until the New Testament "age" began in Acts 2.

"Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures  of   the  prophets,  according  to  the   commandment  of  the   everlasting  God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:"  (Rom. 16:25-26.  See also: Matt. 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16).

From the "beginning" of the New Testament "age" in Acts 2, the new covenant "gospel" of  has been preached and made known in the  world  through the  preaching and work of the apostles in the book of Acts (Matt. 28:19-20).  The New Testament "church" was established by the "verbal" preaching of the apostles in the  1st century,  and by their "written" teaching in the New Testament in this 21st century (Rom. 1:14-18).  Jesus said that the "purpose" of his mission in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John -- before the cross (MMLJBC) -- was to first "fulfill" and then "end" or "abolish" the old covenant "kingdom" of Israel and old Mosaical covenant  (Matt. 21:43).
