The Old Testament "Mission"  And "Work" Of John And Jesus

To The "Last Generation" Of Old Covenant Jews In Israel

God sent John the baptizer of Israel to accomplish three things.  First, to preach Jehovah's old covenant Mosaical "gospel" of repentance and baptism in the "restoration" of unfaithful old covenant Jews to "faith" in the "fulfillment"  of the final old covenant "promises" and "prophecies" of the Mosaical covenant (Matt. 17:9-13; Mk. 9:12; Lk. 24:44-45).  Second, to prepare these Israelites for the "coming" of their "promised" Messiah,   and that God through Jesus would remember and "fulfill" his holy covenant with Israel (Lk. 1:67-80).  Third, while Isaiah, Daniel and other Mosaical prophets uttered old covenant "prophecies" centuries before of the coming of the new covenant "kingdom," John and Jesus "prophesied" that the new covenant "kingdom" was "at hand" --  that the new covenant and "kingdom" would come within a matter of months (Matt. 3:1-4; Lk. 16:16).

God sent Jesus to Old Testament Israel to accomplish three things.  First, to continue the "restoration" of unfaithful Jews in Israel that John had begun.  For Isaiah prophesied of Christ's mission to Israel ". . .It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserve of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth" (Isa. 49:6).  Second, Jesus came to "prepare" that "last generation" of  old covenant Jews for the "end" of Israel's old covenant "kingdom" (Matt. 21:43; Rom. 10:1-4).  Third, Jesus came to announce the immediate coming of the New Testament "age" and its new "kingdom" and teaching after his death, burial and resurrection (Matt. 16:28; Mk. 9:1; Jn. 3:5).

The New Testament declares that the force and validity of John's Old Testament message and baptism and Jesus' preaching of the law of Moses -- "ended" at the cross of Christ with the rest of the old Mosaical law (Acts 2:38; 18:24 - 19:7).  Remember, John like Jesus  was an Old Testament "Israelite" not a New Testament "Christian" -  John was dead and buried before the old covenant "kingdom" of Israel "ended" and the New Testament "age" -- "began" (Matt. 14).

Jesus And "The Limited Commission" Of The Old Mosaical Covenant

The old covenant Mosaical "gospel" that Jesus preached in his ministry under the old Mosaical covenant, like John's old covenant preaching,  was for the "restoration" of unfaithful old covenant Jews in the old covenant "kingdom" of Israel only -- not for the salvation of alien sinners of the world. Both Jesus and his Jewish disciples confined their preaching of the law of Moses to only the Jews, God's old covenant people, for Jesus said, "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matt. 15:24).  Under "the limited commission"  of the old Mosaical covenant (before the cross), Jesus  forbid his Jewish disciples to go to any people but the Israelites.  "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, , and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 10:5-6).
